Verbena Quartz XP Bordeaux Seeds produce deep Bordeaux-coloured blooms on compact, mounded annual plants. Early flowering and strong branching support an even garden display.

Grow it successfully: Read the Verbena Grow Guide for South African conditions.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Tender perennial, usually grown as a warm-season annual.
  • Scientific Name: Verbena × hybrida (horticultural hybrid group).
  • General Sowing Time: Warm-season regional window; see the linked guide. Do not sow outdoors year-round in frost-prone areas.
  • Position: Full Sun
  • Sow Depth: Surface sow (0 mm into the mix), then top-dress with coarse vermiculite; the seed must be covered.
  • Spacing: 25–36 cm final spacing.
  • Germination: Normally 4–6 days at a 22–24°C media temperature under stable conditions; allow up to 14 days in a fluctuating home setup.
  • Seed Supplied: Raw seed; no soaking, scarification or chilling. Any current packet treatment warning takes priority.
  • Light Requirement: Light is optional during germination; provide bright light immediately after emergence.
  • Growth Form and Size: Slightly spreading, mounded growth form; about 20–25 cm high and 25–30 cm wide.
  • Flower Outcome: Early, uniform repeat flowering; commercial spring/summer schedules are about 9–12 weeks from sowing under controlled conditions.

Why Grow This Variety

  • Deep bordeaux-coloured flowers provide a distinctive colour accent.
  • Plants flower 7 to 10 days earlier than the original Quartz range.
  • Compact, mounded growth works well in smaller spaces.
  • Large florets create a bold display.

Garden Uses

Use Quartz XP Bordeaux in full-sun containers, flower beds or borders where its compact growth can add early colour.

Growing Notes

  • Use the warm-season regional sowing window in the linked guide; do not direct-sow into cold, saturated soil.
  • Position plants in full sun.
  • Surface sow, cover with coarse vermiculite, keep at 22–24°C and space plants 25–36 cm apart.
  • Normally 4–6 days at a 22–24°C media temperature under stable conditions; allow up to 14 days in a fluctuating home setup.
