Grow crisp Oregon Sugar Pod II snow peas and harvest the tender, flat green pods before the seeds swell.

Ready to pick snow peas straight from the trellis? Follow our step-by-step Peas Grow Guide for Oregon Sugar Pod II for regional sowing, cool germination, support and flat-pod harvest advice.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season open-pollinated snow pea with flat edible pods
  • Cultivar: Oregon Sugar Pod II
  • Scientific Name: Pisum sativum
  • Seed Form: Raw seed; raw describes the sale form, not confirmed chemical-treatment status, so follow the warning on the physical packet
  • South African Sowing Time: Use the regional cool-season windows in the linked guide rather than treating “year round” as a universal instruction
  • Position: Full sun in cool weather
  • Sow Depth: 10 mm on the current packet; cover fully, because light is not required before emergence
  • Germination: 7–14 days at about 15–20°C; colder soil can delay emergence
  • Pretreatment: None required; sow dry into a pre-moistened bed unless the physical packet gives a different instruction
  • Spacing: 5 cm between plants and 60 cm between rows on the current packet
  • Growth Form: Compact bush or short vine, about 60–75 cm; low trellis support improves airflow and picking
  • Harvest Timing: Current packet 60–120 days; cultivar sources commonly place first harvest near 60–70 days under cool productive conditions
  • Harvest Outcome: Pick the bright-green pods while broad and flat, before the peas enlarge; eat the tender pod and immature peas together

Why Grow This Variety

  • The tender flat pods suit fresh eating, steaming and quick stir-fries.
  • The compact growth form is easy to support and harvest.
  • Oregon State University sources report resistance to pea enation mosaic virus and other pea diseases, but resistance reduces risk rather than replacing crop rotation and airflow.

Garden Uses

Pick the pods while they are still flat and crisp. Eat them fresh, steam briefly or add them near the end of a stir-fry so they retain colour and texture.

Growing Notes

  • Direct sow 10 mm deep in cool, free-draining soil and keep the seed zone evenly moist, never saturated.
  • Install a low trellis before sowing and guide the first tendrils gently onto it.
  • Water steadily from flowering through pod fill and pick every day or two during peak harvest.
  • A fresh pea-compatible rhizobial inoculant is optional where peas have not grown recently; it is not required for germination.
  • Never eat packet seed or use it for sprouts or microgreens unless a separate food-seed product is explicitly labelled for that purpose.
