Onion Hojem is an open-pollinated Allium cepa cultivar that the current breeder sheet classifies as intermediate-day, with firm deep-flat-round, medium-straw bulbs and pungent flavour.

Grow it successfully: Read the exact South African Onion Grow Guide module.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Annual bulb onion
  • Scientific Name: Allium cepa L.
  • Outcome: Current-breeder intermediate-day light-brown bulb
  • General Sowing Time: Not year round. Match the intermediate-day cultivar to a suitable central or southern district and local transplant slot.
  • Position: Full sun
  • Seed Form: Raw, unpelleted seed; open-pollinated cultivar; treatment status is lot-dependent
  • Growth Form: Upright hollow leaves and a swelling bulb at soil level; no support or pruning
  • Pretreatment: None; sow dry
  • Sow Depth: 3 mm
  • Light: Covered seed does not require light; give bright light after emergence
  • Germination: 7–14 days at 15–25°C
  • Spacing: 5–10 × 20 cm after thinning; widen for larger bulbs
  • Harvest: Current breeder development period 218–232 days; stocked label planning range 180–240 days
  • Seed Quantity - 5 g raw seed: Approx 1 250 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 100 g raw seed: Approx 25 000 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 1 kg raw seed: Approx 250 000 seeds

Why Grow This Variety

  • Current breeder evidence identifies a firm intermediate-day fresh-market bulb.
  • Deep-flat-round bulbs have medium-straw skin and creamy-white flesh.
  • Pungent flavour suits cooking and pickling.
  • Fairly good storability follows complete curing.

Garden Uses

Use Hojem raw or cooked in soups, stews, roasted dishes and pickles.

Growing Notes

  • An older South African varietal list calls Hojem short-day; the current breeder sheet is used, and the conflict remains visible in the guide.
  • Do not promise bulbs north of the reliable intermediate-day zone without exact local confirmation.
  • Sow 3 mm deep, thin to the desired bulb size and harden tray plants before transplanting.
  • Keep water even through bulbing and stop late nitrogen.
  • Harvest on top fall and cure thoroughly before storage.

Seed safety: “Raw seed” describes the unpelleted sale form, not chemical-treatment status. Do not eat seed or use it for feed or microgreens; follow the physical lot label.
