Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant and seed: Brassica rapa var. japonica in the catalogue; references also use var. nipposinica. Annual leafy rosette. No further cultivar is confirmed. Raw seed; treatment status unconfirmed.
-
When and where: choose a mild autumn or spring window; suitable coastal sites may crop through winter. Full sun in mild weather, with a cooler position during heat. Protect seedlings from hard freezes and keep soil draining.
-
Sowing: sow about 1 cm deep in a fine, evenly moist seedbed. For intensive baby-leaf cutting rows, use about 6 mm depth and the close-row method explained in the guide.
-
Germination: aim for about 13–24°C; allow roughly 7–14 days, depending on conditions.
-
Leaf-picking spacing: 10–15 cm between plants for regular young leaves; about 20 cm for larger leaves. Intensive baby-leaf rows use a different close-sown system explained in the guide.
-
Full-sized plants: 30–40 cm apart. Leafy height about 20–30 cm; mature spread is not verified for this selection. No routine staking or seedling pinching.
-
Harvest: general baby-leaf picking may begin around a month from sowing, with full rosettes around six to eight weeks in favourable conditions. Judge readiness by leaf size and healthy growth; cool weather can delay picking.
-
Repeat cuts: pick outer leaves or cut about 5 cm above soil without damaging the centre; allow regrowth and replace plants as flowering advances.
-
Pack sizes and approximate counts: 5 g raw seed — 2 000 seeds; 100 g — 40 000; 500 g — 200 000. These catalogue estimates are not a counted quantity or a lot germination guarantee.
Growing Notes
Keep the seedbed evenly moist, thin crowded plants and give sheltered seedlings time to adjust before planting out. Check for slugs, caterpillars and flea beetles. Use draining soil, steady watering and modest label-led feeding; heat, drought and cold followed by longer days can encourage bolting.
Seed safety: grow for baby and mature leaves using the guide’s sowing and care advice. This guide does not recommend these packs for sprout or microgreen production. Do not eat the packet seed. Raw seed does not mean untreated or food-grade; follow all seed-treatment and handling warnings.
Garden and Kitchen Uses
Grow in a vegetable bed or draining container. Wash harvested leaves and stems, then use young leaves in salads and larger leaves in lightly cooked dishes.
