Grow Fennel Smokey Bronze for airy bronze-purple foliage, yellow umbels and a gentle anise-like flavour in an edible ornamental bed.

Ready to grow bronze fennel for aromatic leaves, ornamental colour and seed umbels? Follow our step-by-step Fennel Grow Guide for Smokey Bronze for sowing, spacing, regional timing and leaf-and-seed care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Culinary and ornamental leaf fennel; it does not form a useful Florence-style bulb
  • Scientific Name: Foeniculum vulgare ‘Smokey’
  • Named Type: Smokey Bronze; no breeder, hybrid or open-pollinated claim is declared
  • Seed Form: Raw, unpelleted seed
  • Pack Sizes: 1 g, 5 g and 20 g raw seed; live availability varies
  • General Sowing Time: Spring / Summer on the stocked packet; favour the cooler, steadier part of your local season
  • Position: Full sun in freely drained soil
  • Sow Depth and Light: Cover 0.5 cm; light is not required for germination
  • Germination: 7–14 days on the stocked packet; aim for about 15–24°C and allow up to 21 days in cool conditions
  • Pretreatment: None required; sow dry seed
  • Method: Direct sow preferred; use individual cells if transplanting
  • Spacing: 25 cm on the packet; 15–20 cm for an intensively cut young-leaf row or 45–60 cm for full ornamental and seed plants
  • Growth Form: Tall, upright, airy bronze foliage; listed at 60–150 cm, with support useful in exposed or very fertile sites; no pinching required
  • Harvest: The packet lists 60–90 days; take light leaf harvests once established and allow longer for fully ripe dry seed

Why Grow Smokey Bronze?

  • Fine bronze-purple leaves add edible colour and soft texture to borders and herb beds.
  • Young leaves can season savoury dishes with a mild anise-like note.
  • Yellow umbels add height and support pollinators; fully ripe dried seed can be used as a spice.
  • It is the leaf-and-seed choice in this fennel family, not the bulb choice.

Sowing and Care

  • Sow 0.5 cm deep into fine, moist, freely drained soil and keep the shallow seed zone evenly moist until emergence.
  • Direct sowing protects the taproot. If using modules, transplant a small intact plug at two to three true leaves and harden it for 5–7 days first.
  • Water regularly while establishing, then deeply in dry weather. Avoid waterlogged soil and heavy nitrogen feeding.
  • Use the packet’s 25 cm spacing for a managed row, or allow 45–60 cm for a full ornamental plant. Stake tall stems where wind exposure warrants it.
  • Remove spent umbels before seed ripens if you do not want self-sown plants.

Harvest and Safety

Snip only a small share of young outer fronds at first. For seed, wait until selected umbels are brown and dry, then finish drying under cover. Do not expect a white bulb from this type.

Do not eat the sowing seed. “Raw seed” describes an unpelleted physical form and does not prove that a lot is chemically untreated. Follow the physical lot label. Rinse garden-grown leaves and ripe seed under clean running water as appropriate, and use only locally registered edible-crop controls according to their labels.
