Sowing and Care

• Sow 0.5 cm deep into fine, moist, freely drained soil and keep the shallow seed zone evenly moist until emergence.
• Direct sowing protects the taproot. If using modules, transplant a small intact plug at two to three true leaves and harden it for 5–7 days first.
• Water regularly while establishing, then deeply in dry weather. Avoid waterlogged soil and heavy nitrogen feeding.
• Use the packet’s 25 cm spacing for a managed row, or allow 45–60 cm for a full ornamental plant. Stake tall stems where wind exposure warrants it.
• Remove spent umbels before seed ripens if you do not want self-sown plants.

Harvest and Safety

Snip only a small share of young outer fronds at first. For seed, wait until selected umbels are brown and dry, then finish drying under cover. Do not expect a white bulb from this type.

Do not eat the sowing seed. “Raw seed” describes an unpelleted physical form and does not prove that a lot is chemically untreated. Follow the physical lot label. Rinse garden-grown leaves and ripe seed under clean running water as appropriate, and use only locally registered edible-crop controls according to their labels.
