Ready to start a chilli patch at home? African Red Devil Pepper Seeds are a way to begin with warm seed-starting conditions and grow your plants on in a sunny, well-drained spot. Chilli heat and harvest timing can vary, so observe the plants you grow rather than planning around a fixed rating or date.

Ready to raise a healthy chilli plant from seed? Follow our Peppers and Chillies Grow Guide for sowing, seedling care, South African regional timing, transplanting and steady watering.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop group: Capsicum pepper. Chilli heat can vary; handle fruit cautiously.
  • Season: start under warmth; plant outside after frost risk has passed and the soil has warmed.
  • Sowing: use clean, free-draining seed mix and cover seed about 6 mm deep. Keep the mix warm and evenly moist, not saturated.
  • Seedlings: provide strong light after emergence, pot on after true leaves develop and harden off gradually before planting out.
  • Position and care: full sun, freely draining soil and steady root-zone moisture. As general garden guidance, start around 30–60 cm between plants and adjust for actual mature growth and airflow.
  • Harvest: pick sound fruit at the stage you need with clean snips. Wear gloves when handling hot chillies and keep hands away from eyes and face.

If seedlings stall, check mix temperature, moisture, light and drainage before feeding more. Once plants are outside, protect them from frost, keep leaves as dry as practical when watering and inspect pests or disease before choosing any registered treatment.
