Grow aromatic sage leaves for savoury cooking in a sunny herb bed or a well-drained pot. Soft grey-green foliage and blue to violet flower spikes also bring interest to the garden.

• Plant and growth form: Common culinary sage, Salvia officinalis; a bushy perennial herb with a woody base. No named cultivar is specified.
• Seed form: Raw seed in 2 g, 20 g and 100 g packs. Raw does not mean untreated; follow your packet handling instructions.
• Sowing season: Spring/summer on the label; adjust for local frost, rainfall and severe heat using the regional guide.
• Position: Full sun and good airflow; some afternoon shelter can help in very hot sites.
• Sowing depth: About 3 mm of fine seed-starting mix. Keep lightly moist and free draining; no routine pretreatment is specified.
• Germination: The label gives 14–21 days. Aim for about 21°C in the sowing mix; timing varies with conditions.
• Planting out: Use well-rooted seedlings about 10 cm tall, acclimatised gradually to outdoor conditions. Avoid damaging frost.

• Water and feeding: Water young plants as needed; avoid saturated soil. Established plants need modest feeding, with pots checked regularly.
• Pruning and support: Lightly trim leafy growth as spring growth resumes. Do not cut hard into old bare wood; stake only if needed.
• Leaf harvest: Pick lightly after establishment, especially in year one. The packet’s 75–90 days is an estimate with no stated starting point; plant growth is the better guide.

Growing Notes

Good drainage matters from sowing onwards. Avoid standing water, give seedlings bright light after emergence and leave plenty of foliage when picking. If plants struggle, check root-zone moisture, light and airflow before adding feed or spraying. Only use plant-protection products suitable for edible herbs and observe their label instructions and harvest interval.

This product is culinary common sage, not Russian sage or an ornamental bedding salvia. Do not eat sowing seed or use it for sprouts. Follow any treatment warning on your current packet.
