Helichrysum Bracteatum Frosted Sulphur Seed produces papery strawflower blooms in soft sulphur-yellow tones for sunny South African cutting gardens and dried-flower work. These everlasting-style flowers are valued for their long-lasting texture and strong vase or drying potential.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Scientific Name: Xerochrysum bracteatum (syn. Helichrysum bracteatum)
  • General Sowing Time: Spring to early summer once frost risk has passed; start in trays 4-6 weeks before planting out.
  • Position: Full sun.
  • Sow Depth: Surface sow; do not cover seed as light is required for germination.
  • Spacing: 25-30 cm apart.
  • Germination: 7-10 days in warm conditions.
  • Height: Around 90-100 cm for taller cut-flower types; support may be useful.
  • Available Pack Sizes: 100 raw seed, 1000 raw seed

Why Grow This Variety

  • Soft sulphur-yellow blooms add a gentle highlight to cut-flower bunches.
  • Excellent for dried arrangements because the papery bracts hold shape well.
  • Good fresh cut flower when harvested at the right stage.
  • Attracts pollinators in sunny garden beds.

Garden Uses

Grow Helichrysum Frosted Sulphur in a sunny cutting patch, mixed annual border or dried-flower garden. The pale yellow tones combine well with white, rose, apricot, orange and deeper red strawflowers for bunches and everlasting arrangements.

Growing Notes

  • Start in trays and transplant carefully once seedlings are strong and weather is warm.
  • Bottom water or mist gently so the uncovered seed is not buried.
  • Use well-drained soil and avoid overly wet conditions.
  • Pinch young plants if you want more branching and higher stem production.
