Grow a lively, low border of double China asters with Colour Carpet Mix. Its compact habit suits sunny rockeries, window boxes and grouped bedding displays.

Ready to grow a colourful low border? Follow our China Aster Grow Guide for sowing depth, warm germination, South African planting windows and compact-plant care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant type: Annual China aster (Callistephus chinensis)
  • Sowing time: Start protected trays before a mild, frost-free planting window; use local frost and heat conditions
  • Position: Full sun in freely drained soil
  • Sow depth: Cover seed lightly, about 3 mm deep
  • Germination: Commonly 10–14 days around 21–22°C under suitable conditions; allow extra time before discarding a tray
  • Spacing: About 25 cm apart
  • Height: About 20 cm under suitable conditions

Why Grow This Variety

  • Mixed, double flowers create a colourful front-of-border display.
  • Compact plants suit smaller spaces and generous containers.
  • A bedding choice for rockeries, edging and window boxes.

Growing Notes

  • Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist, never waterlogged; give seedlings bright light after emergence.
  • Harden tray-grown plants gradually before planting outside after frost risk has passed.
  • Set plants into a sunny, freely drained bed or container after frost risk has passed.
  • Keep roots evenly moist while plants establish; allow airflow around the compact mounds.
  • Remove faded or damaged flowers to keep the display tidy.

China asters are ornamental flowers, not food. Keep sowing seed out of reach of children and pets.
