Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant type: Tender, seed-grown bedding dahlia; grown as a warm-season annual, but selected plants can form tubers for frost-free storage
  • Scientific name: Dahlia × hybrida
  • Series: PanAmerican Seed Figaro™ Original Field Grown Mixture / current Figaro Mixture
  • Seed form: Raw; current variants contain 25 or 1,000 seeds
  • Sow time: Packet: spring / summer; start in trays 6–8 weeks before the safe planting date
  • Position: Full sun; light afternoon protection is useful in extreme reflected heat
  • Sow depth: Packet: 4 mm; cover with fine seedling mix or vermiculite
  • Germination warmth: Exact breeder: 20–23°C
  • Germination: Packet: 7–14 days; exact controlled breeder reference: 3–7 days from 50% to maximum germination
  • Moisture: Keep evenly moist through emergence, never waterlogged; give bright light and more air immediately after emergence
  • Transplant: Pot on at 1–2 true-leaf pairs; harden for 7–10 days; plant after frost when nights and soil are mild
  • Spacing: Packet: 30 × 30 cm; exact breeder range: 25–36 cm
  • Size and growth form: Mounded, upright; 36–46 cm high × 25–30 cm wide
  • Pinching and support: Routine pinching and staking are not needed for compact bedding plants; pinch once only if a young plant is lanky
  • Flower outcome: 100% semi-double and fully double mixed blooms; breeder-controlled schedule is 4–5 plug weeks plus 5–6 finish weeks

Growing Notes

Sow one raw seed per clean module, cover to the packet's 4 mm, and hold the medium at 20–23°C. Keep it evenly moist but aerated. Move emerged seedlings into strong light immediately so they stay compact. Plant at the same depth as the plug into fertile, free-draining soil after frost. Water at soil level in dry weather, mulch the root zone, avoid high-nitrogen feeding and deadhead to extend flowering.

Seed-grown, not a named tuber clone: Figaro is a selected seed mixture, so individual plants still vary. Save a favourite plant's first-season tubers if you want to reproduce that exact plant next season.
