Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-grown cut-flower annual
  • Scientific Name: Clarkia amoena
  • Series / Growth Form: Sakata Grace F1; upright, tall and branching
  • Seed Form: Raw seed; no pretreatment
  • Best Sowing Window: Cool autumn-to-spring conditions; flowering responds to lengthening days
  • Position: Full sun; well-drained, lower-fertility soil
  • Sow Depth: 3 mm; cover lightly with fine mix or vermiculite
  • Germination Light: Give bright light and ventilation immediately after emergence
  • Germination Temperature: 18°C breeder target
  • Germination: Allow 10–14 days at home
  • Garden Spacing: 40 cm as listed on the packet
  • Pinched Cut-Row Spacing: About 25 × 25 cm outdoors
  • Intensive Single-Stem Spacing: 10 × 10 cm with support and active crop management
  • Height: About 70–80 cm
  • Pinching / Support: Pinch once about one week after transplant for a branching cut crop; do not pinch single stems; support tall stems
  • Bloom Timing: Plan on 15–21 weeks in cool winter-to-spring conditions; the packet’s 12-week line is an earliest estimate
  • Harvest: Cut when 3–6 flowers are open

Why Grow This Series

  • Strong stems and clustered flowers are bred for cutting.
  • Mixed colours include lavender, red, rose-pink, salmon, shell pink and white.
  • Pinched plants can branch into multiple cutting stems.
  • Managed stems can provide a long vase display.

Garden Uses

Use Grace Mix in a supported cutting row or in the middle of a cool-season sunny border where the taller stems can rise above compact flowers.

Growing Notes

  • Sow one raw seed per small plug, cover by about 3 mm and keep at 18°C with even moisture.
  • Transplant at about four weeks while the plug is compact, handle from below and keep the original soil line.
  • Harden for 7–10 days, then choose 40 cm garden spacing or the closer supported cut-row system described above.
  • Feed lightly, water at soil level and maintain strong airflow; excess nitrogen produces soft stems and poorer flowers.
  • Harvest when 3–6 flowers are open and place stems straight into clean water.

Ornamental seed: Raw describes the seed form, not food use. Do not eat the seed or plant material unless the purchased lot is specifically labelled for food use.
