Add bold red colour to a sunny border or cutting row with Optimo Red. This upright China aster bears large, full flowers with strong vase appeal.

Ready to grow beautiful China asters for the vase? Follow our China Aster Grow Guide for sowing depth, warm germination, South African planting windows and cut-flower care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant type: Annual China aster (Callistephus chinensis)
  • Sowing time: Start protected trays before a mild, frost-free planting window; use local frost and heat conditions
  • Position: Full sun in freely drained soil
  • Sow depth: Cover seed lightly, about 3 mm deep
  • Germination: Commonly 10–14 days around 21–22°C under suitable conditions; allow extra time before discarding a tray
  • Spacing: About 25–30 cm apart
  • Height: Breeder range about 76–91 cm; conditions affect the result

Why Grow This Variety

  • Large, chrysanthemum-shaped red blooms add strong seasonal colour.
  • Upright stems suit cut-flower rows and fresh arrangements.
  • Full flowers make a striking contrast with other summer annuals.

Growing Notes

  • Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist, never waterlogged; give seedlings bright light after emergence.
  • Harden tray-grown plants gradually before planting outside after frost risk has passed.
  • Raise seedlings in trays and transplant after frost into fertile, freely drained soil.
  • Support tall stems in windy beds and water at soil level when practical.
  • Cut when outer petals begin opening and move stems into clean water.

China asters are ornamental flowers, not food. Keep sowing seed out of reach of children and pets.
