Grow large, many-petalled China asters in a sunny cutting patch or the middle of a border. Giants of California Mix brings full blooms in mixed colours for fresh arrangements.

Ready to grow beautiful China asters for the vase? Follow our China Aster Grow Guide for sowing depth, warm germination, South African planting windows and cut-flower care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant type: Annual China aster (Callistephus chinensis)
  • Sowing time: Start protected trays before a mild, frost-free planting window; use local frost and heat conditions
  • Position: Full sun in freely drained soil
  • Sow depth: Cover seed lightly, about 3 mm deep
  • Germination: Commonly 10–14 days around 21–22°C under suitable conditions; allow extra time before discarding a tray
  • Spacing: About 30 cm apart
  • Height: Typically about 60–75 cm; conditions affect stem length

Why Grow This Variety

  • Large, full blooms make a strong cut-flower display.
  • Tall stems add height to sunny beds and borders.
  • A mixed colour range works well in seasonal bouquets.

Growing Notes

  • Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist, never waterlogged; give seedlings bright light after emergence.
  • Harden tray-grown plants gradually before planting outside after frost risk has passed.
  • Plant out after frost into fertile, freely drained soil, giving tall stems space and airflow.
  • Stake or net stems in exposed beds before wind or rain bends them.
  • Cut flowers as the outer petals start to open and place stems promptly in clean water.

China asters are ornamental flowers, not food. Keep sowing seed out of reach of children and pets.
