Dichondra Silver Falls brings soft silver foliage to hanging baskets, tall pots and sunny garden edges, with stems that trail or spread close to the ground.

Ready to grow your own silver cascade? Follow our step-by-step Dichondra Silver Falls Grow Guide for sowing, germination, basket planting and care in your region.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant: Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’; a trailing ornamental perennial, often grown seasonally in cold areas.
  • Seed form: raw seed in the listed 10- and 100-seed packs. Raw does not establish chemical-treatment status.
  • Sowing: sow near the surface and cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep the initial germination stage dark, then give seedlings bright light as they emerge. No soaking, scratching or chilling is prescribed.
  • Germination: 20–25°C in the medium; allow about 7–14 days with even moisture and good drainage.
  • Position: sun to light partial shade. Protect from frost and avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Ground spacing: 46–122 cm between rooted plants; wider gaps take longer to fill.
  • Baskets: one plant can trail from a mixed-pot edge. For a fuller 30 cm Silver Falls basket, the breeder's commercial reference uses five young plugs; fewer plants take longer to fill it.
  • Growth: about 5–8 cm high on the ground, with 90–120 cm spread or trails; long warm seasons can allow trails approaching 1.8 m.
  • Care: keep seedlings evenly moist; allow established pots to dry somewhat between thorough waterings. Feed modestly and trim only as needed; no routine pinching or climbing support required.
  • Season: start in protected warmth or during suitable spring/summer conditions; plant out after local frost risk has passed.

Before sowing: the online packet image shows 3 cm depth and older product instructions show 3.5 cm. These differ from the breeder and university light-cover method used in this guide. Do not bury the seed 3–3.5 cm deep. Ask us to check any different lot-specific directions on your current packet.

Spacing note: the online packet and older listing give 25 cm. The ground-cover guidance above follows the breeder's landscape range; basket planting is handled separately.

Why Grow This Variety

  • Silver foliage creates contrast in pots, baskets and garden borders.
  • Branching trails can cascade over a rim or spread along a well-drained bed.
  • Established plants tolerate heat and dry spells, while baskets still need regular moisture checks.

Growing Notes

Start in trays or small pots for control of warmth and moisture. Pot on with several true leaves and a well-held root ball, then harden gradually before planting outdoors. Allow time for foliage to fill out; a mature cascade is not an immediate seedling result.

Ornamental use only. Plant contact may irritate skin. Wash hands after handling, keep sowing seed away from food, children and pets, and retain the current packet's treatment warnings.
