Raw seed for shade or partial sun

Black Dragon

Black Dragon is raw seed. Plants have a mounded, upright growth form with dark serrated foliage, reaching 30–36 cm high and 25–30 cm wide. Grow in shade or partial sun and space 25–36 cm apart. The controlled breeder schedule is 5–6 plug weeks plus 5–6 finish weeks.

Wizard Mix

Wizard Mix is raw seed and contains six listed colours. Plants have a compact mounded, upright growth form, reaching 30–36 cm high and 25–30 cm wide. Grow in shade or partial sun and space 25–36 cm apart. The controlled breeder schedule is 5–6 plug weeks plus 7–9 finish weeks.

Pelleted Premium Shade seed

Kong Empire Mix

Kong Empire Mix is pelleted seed and contains all six Kong colours. It has very large leaves on mounded, upright plants about 46–51 cm high and 38–46 cm wide. Full shade gives the best performance; protected partial sun is possible, but avoid dry, intense sun and wind. Space 38–61 cm apart. The controlled breeder schedule is 5–6 plug weeks plus 3–4 finish weeks.

Pelleted Premium Sun seed

Crimson Gold, Pineapple Surprise, Coral Candy and Watermelon are Premium Sun selections in the exact live Gardening scope. All are suitable for shade. They can tolerate full sun where relative humidity is high, but foliage can scorch in full sun where humidity is low. Acclimate plants gradually and prefer morning sun or bright filtered light in hot, dry gardens.

Premium Sun Crimson Gold

Crimson Gold is pelleted seed with a mounded growth form and deep red foliage edged golden green. Plants reach 36–46 cm high and wide; space 30–46 cm apart. It is late flowering, so foliage remains the main display.

Premium Sun Pineapple Surprise

The exact Gardening variants are pelleted. Plants have an upright growth form, reaching 46–66 cm high and 46–56 cm wide; space 30–41 cm apart. A small proportion can show a darker green and burgundy pattern rather than the dominant chartreuse pattern. It flowers very late.

Premium Sun Coral Candy

Coral Candy is pelleted seed with a compact, mounded growth form. Plants reach 25–41 cm high and 30–36 cm wide; space 20–25 cm apart. Foliage colour can change with conditions, and the compact size suits front borders and containers.

Premium Sun Watermelon

Watermelon is pelleted seed with a mounded growth form. Plants reach about 51 cm high and 46–56 cm wide; space 30–46 cm apart. Cooler conditions give watermelon-coloured leaves with green edges, while warmer conditions deepen the pink. It is late flowering.

When to Sow in South Africa

Winter-rainfall Western Cape

Start trays under protection from late winter into spring once the required warm germination temperatures can be maintained. Plant out after cold, saturated weather eases. Shelter young plants from drying spring wind and hard afternoon sun; irrigate consistently as winter rain ends.

Frost-prone interior

Start seed indoors in late winter or early spring and plant out only after frost danger has passed. Coleus is frost tender. Before the first autumn frost, move valued containers under protection or take cuttings from healthy plants.

Humid coast and KZN Midlands

Sow during warm, manageable weather when trays can be kept airy. High relative humidity makes brighter positions more suitable for Premium Sun selections, but it also increases disease pressure. Water early, avoid saturated trays and keep foliage uncrowded. Keep Kong in shade.

Hot-dry or subtropical interior

Sow in spring or a milder warm-season window. Use bright shade or morning sun, mulch after planting and protect foliage from dry afternoon heat. Low relative humidity can scorch even Premium Sun foliage in full sun.

How to Sow Raw Coleus Seed

  1. Fill a clean tray or cells with fine, free-draining, low-salt seedling medium and water it before sowing.
  2. Place Black Dragon or Wizard seed on the surface, one seed per cell where practical.
  3. Press gently for contact and apply only a light, translucent dusting of fine vermiculite.
  4. Maintain 22–24°C and medium-wet moisture without saturation. Use a fine mist or bottom watering so seed is not displaced.
  5. Give seedlings bright indirect light and airflow after emergence.

How to Sow Pelleted Coleus Seed

  1. Place one intact pellet on the prepared surface of each cell. Do not crush, peel, soak or scarify it.
  2. Press gently and apply only a light, translucent vermiculite dusting.
  3. Mist thoroughly so the pellet and surrounding medium are fully moist. Keep the medium at a medium-wet level, never saturated, and do not let the pellet dry hard before emergence.
  4. Maintain 22–24°C for Kong or 19–28°C for the four Premium Sun selections.
  5. After emergence, reduce humidity gradually and provide bright indirect light and airflow.

Transplanting and Spacing

Pot seedlings on when true leaves are present and the plug can be handled without crushing the stem. Harden plants gradually over about a week, increasing outdoor time and light in stages. Use the product-specific final spacing in this guide: 25–36 cm for Black Dragon and Wizard, 38–61 cm for Kong, 30–46 cm for Crimson Gold, 30–41 cm for Pineapple Surprise, 20–25 cm for Coral Candy and 30–46 cm for Watermelon.

Ongoing Care and Foliage Outcome

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Water when the upper layer begins to dry; repeated severe wilting damages leaves, while waterlogged soil encourages root and foliar disease. Water early so foliage is dry by nightfall. Feed containers lightly and regularly because coleus is sensitive to high salts. Pinching a growing tip after establishment can encourage branching, but naturally compact selections need little shaping. No support is normally required; protect Kong's large leaves from wind. Remove flower spikes if foliage is the priority.

Under controlled production, Kong can reach a finished display in about 8–10 weeks from sowing, Black Dragon in about 10–12 weeks, the Premium Sun selections in about 11–14 weeks and Wizard in about 12–15 weeks. Outdoor South African timing varies with temperature, light and transplant stress. There is no edible harvest; the usable outcome is sustained ornamental foliage through warm, frost-free weather.

Light, Colour and Series Placement

Too little light causes stretched growth and duller colour, but sudden dry full sun can bleach or scorch leaves. Move plants into stronger light over several days. Keep Kong primarily shaded. Use Black Dragon and Wizard in shade or partial sun. Treat Premium Sun as humidity-qualified sun tolerance, not an unrestricted national full-sun promise.

Pests, Disease and Safe Control

Watch for aphids, mealybugs and whiteflies. Inspect leaf undersides, isolate badly affected containers and begin with physical removal or a firm water rinse where practical. Alternaria, Botrytis, Verticillium and downy mildew are recognised coleus disease risks. Reduce crowding, improve airflow, water early and remove diseased debris. If a pesticide or fungicide is needed, use only a product registered for the crop and site in South Africa and follow its current label.

Why Germination or Establishment Fails

  • Seed is under dense mix: the breeder calls for only a light cover; heavy burial delays or prevents emergence.
  • Pellet did not soften or dried again: moisten it thoroughly and keep the surrounding medium evenly medium wet until emergence.
  • Tray is saturated: waterlogged medium reduces oxygen and increases damping-off risk.
  • Wrong temperature: use 22–24°C for Black Dragon, Wizard and Kong, and 19–28°C for Premium Sun.
  • High salts or strong early feeding: coleus is sensitive to salt and high ammonium during germination.
  • Seedlings stretch: provide brighter indirect light, more space and airflow after emergence.
  • Leaves scorch: plants were moved too quickly into dry full sun or a shade series was placed too brightly.
  • Plants collapse after planting: check for frost, severe wilting, waterlogging, wind damage or an unhardened transplant.
