How to Grow Amaryllis Bulbs Hydroponically

🌸  A Beautiful, Low-Maintenance Indoor Display

If you’re looking for a clean, elegant and surprisingly easy way to grow amaryllis indoors, hydroponics (growing in water only) is the perfect method. No soil, no mess — just a striking bulb, a clear vase, and a spectacular display of colourful blooms right through the festive season and beyond.

Hydroponic amaryllis growing has become a global décor trend, especially during Christmas, where these bold flowers add instant warmth and beauty to any home. Whether on a dining table, kitchen counter, office desk or sunny windowsill, they elevate the space effortlessly.

Here’s everything you need to know.

🌿 What Is Hydroponic Amaryllis Growing?

Hydroponics simply means growing a plant in water instead of soil. Amaryllis bulbs are particularly well-suited to this because their large, energy-rich bulbs contain everything needed to produce a flower stalk and leaves — they simply need moisture, light, and a touch of nutrition.

Seeing the roots develop in the clear vase adds a whole new dimension to the experience. It’s decorative, educational and incredibly rewarding.

🌱 Why Grow Amaryllis in Water?

Here are a few reasons gardeners love this method:

  • Clean & soil-free – perfect for indoor décor

  • Fast, reliable blooming – amaryllis bulbs are eager growers

  • Fascinating to watch – see roots forming and growing in real time

  • A perfect festive gift – unique, thoughtful, and easy for anyone to grow

  • Reusable vase – simply clean and use again next year

  • Ideal for beginners – almost no maintenance required

🌸 Choosing the Right Amaryllis Bulb

Not all amaryllis are the same. For hydroponics, choose a large, premium, flowering-size bulb. Bigger bulbs produce stronger stems and more blooms.

Our customer favourite is the Hot Lips Amaryllis, known for its vivid red petals edged with crisp white — a real centrepiece flower with excellent reliability.

🏺 Choosing the Right Vase

A hydroponic amaryllis vase is specially shaped with a narrow top section that holds the bulb securely above the water level.

Your vase should be:

  • Clear glass (to observe root growth)

  • Designed so the bulb doesn’t sit in the water

  • Stable and strong enough to support a tall flower stalk

  • Approximately 19–22cm tall with a wide base for balance

Our premium Hydroponic Amaryllis Vase (H19.5cm × D14cm) is ideal for this purpose.

💧 How to Grow Amaryllis Bulbs Hydroponically

Follow these steps for a perfect display:

1. Fill the Vase with Water

Fill your vase so that the water sits just below the base of the bulb.
👉 The bulb should not touch the water — only the roots will grow into it.

Leaving a small air gap prevents rotting and encourages strong root growth.

2. Position the Bulb

Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing upwards.
The base with the dried root plate should face downward toward the water.

It should sit securely in the vase’s top opening without wobbling.

3. Add Bulb Food

Hydroponic growing gives excellent visual results, but bulbs do appreciate a bit of nutrition.

Add the included bulb food sachet to the water and dissolve fully.
This helps the bulb maintain strong growth and supports multiple flower stems.

Top up with a small pinch every 2–3 weeks if desired.

4. Find the Ideal Location

Amaryllis thrive indoors when placed in:

  • Bright, indirect light

  • A warm room (18–24°C)

  • A stable spot away from heat sources or draughts

Avoid harsh midday sun on very hot days.

5. Rooting & Early Growth

Within 1–2 weeks you will see roots reaching down into the water.
Shortly after, a flower stalk will push upward — often noticeably each day!

Rotate the vase every few days to encourage even, upright growth.

6. Water Maintenance

Clear water helps keep the roots healthy.

  • Top up water as needed

  • Change water every 7–10 days

  • Rinse vase lightly if residue builds up

  • Make sure water always sits just below the bulb

This routine keeps the roots oxygenated and the plant thriving.

🌺 Blooming

Amaryllis typically bloom 6–10 weeks after you begin the process.
Sonatini varieties like Hot Lips often produce 2–3 flower stalks, giving you a long, beautiful display.

🌼 After Flowering

Once the blooms fade:

  1. Cut only the spent flower stalks, not the leaves.

  2. Allow leaves to grow — they feed the bulb for next year.

  3. Continue hydroponically with light feeding or move the bulb to soil.

  4. After the growing season, allow the bulb to rest dry in winter.

With the right care, your amaryllis will rebloom year after year.

🎁 A Perfect Festive Gift

Hydroponic amaryllis sets make thoughtful Christmas presents.
They’re elegant, easy to grow, and offer weeks of vibrant colour — perfect for a festive table or as a unique hostess gift.

Growing amaryllis hydroponically is a beautiful way to bring living colour into your home.
It’s simple, clean, and incredibly rewarding — and once you try it, you may never go back to soil-grown amaryllis again.
