Planting: place sound whole tubers chits-up; cover by 10–15 cm

Spacing: use the standard 25–35 cm unless the supplied current-lot label confirms small chat-grade planting stock; only then use 15–20 cm

Care: keep evenly moist without waterlogging and earth up as shoots reach about 15–25 cm

Harvest: lift young tubers early for baby size or allow the later/maincrop plants to die back and the skins to set for mature potatoes
Chats explained: South African agronomic material can use “chats” for small seed-potato planting stock, while “baby potatoes” describes a crop lifted young. Confirm the supplied tuber grade on the lot label before changing spacing.
Planting-stock safety: these tubers are supplied for planting, not eating. Keep the official current-lot and any chemical-treatment label, and follow every direction on it. Do not assume certified, treated, untreated or organic status from this page. Do not plant wet, slimy, mouldy, badly rotting or green tubers.
Valor stock may arrive slightly soft and already chitted; sound short chits are living shoots, not a defect. Plant promptly in suitable conditions with chits facing upwards. Wet decay, mould or a foul smell is not normal.
