Expect lush, tropical foliage, creamy blooms, and that warm, golden glow in your cooking. 🍛✨

What makes this pack special

  • Five quality rhizomes for generous planting—pots or beds.

  • Bold, fresh flavour that shop spice can’t match—peppery, citrusy, deeply earthy.

  • Beautiful and useful—ornamental foliage, edible rhizomes, natural dye for fabrics.

  • Perfect for South African gardens—thrives in our warm summers; easy in containers up north where winter frost bites.

The feel-good benefits

  • Confidence in the kitchen—harvest exactly when you want peak flavour and aroma. 🧡

  • Satisfying self-sufficiency—from soil to spice jar, you did that.

  • Calm, low-maintenance growing—a forgiving plant once it’s warm and settled.

How to grow (SA-friendly tips)

  • Season: Plant spring to early summer after frost risk (Sept–Nov in cooler regions; earlier in frost-free areas).

  • Light: Bright, indirect sun or light shade—especially welcome in hot inland summers.

  • Soil: Rich, loose, well-drained mix. Blend compost + a bit of coarse sand. Target pH 5.5–7.0.

  • Spacing & depth: Set rhizomes 3–5 cm deep, buds up, 30–40 cm apart.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist through the growing season—never waterlogged. Reduce watering as leaves yellow in late autumn.

  • Feeding: Monthly light feeds of balanced organic fertiliser or compost tea during active growth.

  • Containers: 25–30 cm wide pots (or larger) with drainage work brilliantly; mulch to keep roots cool.

  • Winter care (Highveld & cooler zones): Plants go dormant. Foliage dies back—keep rhizomes dry-ish and protected from frost. Move pots under cover or lift/store rhizomes until spring.

Harvest & use

  • Timing: 8–10 months after planting—when leaves yellow and die back.

  • Fresh vs cured: Use fresh for maximum zing, or boil, dry, and grind for a longer-keeping pantry spice.

  • Beyond the kitchen: Create natural golden dye for fabric and craft projects.
(Traditional uses are widely reported; this isn’t medical advice.)
