Growing Tips for Einzi Cactus Dahlias in South Africa
-
Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil. Improve clay-heavy ground with compost and a touch of river sand. Mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.
-
Sunlight: Full sun is best. In hotter provinces, light afternoon shade reduces water stress.
-
Planting time: From October to December, once the danger of frost has passed.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant tubers 8 cm deep with the growing tips facing down. Space 30–40 cm apart for airflow and growth.
-
Watering: Water deeply every 3–4 days during dry spells, especially in Gauteng and other inland areas. Avoid soggy soil.
-
Feeding: Use a balanced bulb food every few weeks during the growing season.
For best results, feed with Hadeco Bulb Food.
-
Support: Taller stems may need staking to prevent them from toppling in summer storms.
-
Deadheading & pruning: Remove spent blooms and prune lightly to encourage even more flowers.
-
Lifting: In July (mid-winter), cut stems back to 5 cm and lift tubers if desired. Store dry until replanting in spring.
